Lecture week 5

1895 - The first movie ever made is "Workers Leaving The Lumiere
factory." It was the French Lumiere brothers who made it.

1897 - The first cinema was built in Paris.

1898 - The Lumiere's company had produced more than 1000 titles.

1903 - The first narrative film. It was Edward S. Porter who produced the 10 minutes long film "The great train robbery".

1905 - First real movie theaters, The Nickelodeons.

1906 - First full length feature film. Most sources says that it was "The story of the Kelly Gang" written and directed by Charles Tait.

1909 - The first movie palace.

1912 - The serials became very popular during the great war. The first American serial was "what happened to Mary?"

1913 -The birth of the "Studio system". A system of advanced planning and budgeting. It became easer for film-studios to produce more than one movie at the time.

1914 - Charlie Chaplin became the first movie star. His debut was the short comedy Making a Living.


1919 - In 8 years the number of full-length feature each year increased from 2-646.

1920 - The German Expressionism film "The cabinet of Dr. Caligari was released. This is maybe the most influential of all German Expressionism films. For Example: Film Noir, one of the earliest horror-films. It has also been a big influence for many other directors. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californiacation used the film as a reference for its music-video.
